The performing arts world asks a great deal of the human body. Dancers train through pain as a matter of course. Actors and musicians carry the physical toll of their craft in ways that rarely get discussed publicly. The repetitive strain of rehearsal, the demands of live performance, and the pressure to keep working through discomfort create a population of people who need specialized care and often have no clear idea where to find it.
Kate Fox noticed that gap early in her career and has spent the better part of twenty-five years doing something about it.
Fox is the founder and owner of New Path Wellness, located at 150 East Olive Avenue in Downtown Burbank. A certified massage therapist since 2001, she holds credentials as a Neuromuscular Therapist, Certified Lifestyle Medicine Associate, and Certified Somatic Practitioner of Alignment, a combination of qualifications that reflects the breadth of what she has built. New Path Wellness is not a conventional massage studio. It is a full-service wellness center organized around a specific and underserved idea: that performing artists deserve access to serious, specialized bodywork, and that injury treatment should not be a luxury available only to those who can afford it.
The Practice Behind the Mission
New Path Wellness offers a comprehensive range of services that extend well beyond standard massage therapy. The practice covers injury treatment and rehabilitation, postural alignment therapy, neuromuscular therapy, energy work, personal training, and wellness programming that includes classes, workshops, and events.
The clinical emphasis of the work reflects Fox's background. Neuromuscular therapy operates at a more precise level than general massage, addressing specific muscles, trigger points, and nerve pathways that contribute to pain and dysfunction. Combined with postural alignment work, it addresses not just symptoms but the underlying mechanical patterns that produce them. For performing artists whose bodies are their instrument, that distinction matters considerably.
Fox's client base reflects the community she has built the practice around. Dancers, actors, musicians, singers, and teachers of all performing arts disciplines have found their way to New Path Wellness, drawn by the specificity of the care and the genuine understanding of what their bodies go through in training and performance.
The Performing Artists Injury Treatment Center
One of the more distinctive aspects of Fox's work is the Performing Artists' Injury Treatment Center, the community service arm of New Path Wellness that she created to address the economic reality facing many in the arts.
The PAITC offers injury treatment at reduced prices to anyone participating in a performing art form who is experiencing pain or limitation that affects their ability to study, train, rehearse, or perform. Students, pre-professionals, working professionals, and teachers of all ages are eligible. The underlying premise is straightforward: an injured performer who cannot access treatment is a performer who cannot work, and the economic precarity that characterizes much of the performing arts community should not determine who gets care.
In Burbank, where Pacific Ballet Theatre, the Burbank Philharmonic, and a broader creative community connected to the entertainment industry all call the city home, that kind of resource has particular relevance.
Downtown Burbank as Home Base
The location on East Olive Avenue places New Path Wellness at the center of a downtown that has been finding its footing as a destination for independent businesses and community-minded services. For performing artists working or training in the area, the central location matters.
Fox has been part of the Burbank business community long enough to understand what the city's creative sector needs and what it lacks. The practice she has built reflects that understanding, and the programming she offers through workshops and events extends the work beyond the treatment room into education and community building.
A Conversation Worth Having
New Path Wellness represents the kind of business that a community like Burbank's is better for having: specialized, mission-driven, and founded by someone with genuine expertise and a long-term commitment to the people she serves.
We are looking forward to a full conversation with Kate Fox about her practice, her approach to performing arts medicine, and what she has learned over two decades of working at the intersection of wellness and the performing arts. That interview will follow in an upcoming issue.
